Future Mama Finding ‘Peace of Mind’ with New Health Habits

I wanted to give a little update on Future Mama, and the nutritional coaching we are doing to support her healthy pregnancy.

We have ‘met’ twice in a 4-week period, and in that short time she has made great strides in altering her dietary habits!

The first challenge was to get her to eat breakfast.  This is a pillar to all my nutritional programs, since breakfast  impacts the way your body responds to stress, metabolizes food for energy, preserves and builds muscle, burns fat, protects cellular health, balances mood….and much more!

After learning ‘why’ it’s so important to eat breakfast, Future Mama made the commitment to eat it every day.  She then needed coaching on ‘how’ to eat breakfast.  So we talked about how to balance her plate with lean sources of protein,  complex carbohydrates and healthy fats.  Suggestions included fruit and protein smoothies, or string cheese with fruit, or yogurt with fruit and nuts, oatmeal and a hard-boiled egg, veggie omeletes, and many more options that were quick, light and portable.

We also talked about planning the night before, so that she could grab something out of the fridge or keep it at work, since she likes her sleep and knew she wouldn’t wake up early to prepare her meals for the day.

When I talked to Future Mama yesterday, she reported fewer cravings for her favorite greasy foods, and finds she can manage her hunger better by eating smaller meals more frequently.  This serves to balance her blood sugar so that she doesn’t have the extreme highs and lows.  In doing so, she is naturally making better choices because she is paying attention to what her body needs, rather than eating mindlessly and falling victim to her habitual patterns around fast food.  She only had fast food once in an entire month!  Way to go Future Mama!

The most rewarding part of her journey, as stated yesterday, is that she has more ‘peace of mind’ since taking better care of herself and her baby.  She told me that the guilt is gone around eating as she takes a proactive role in her baby’s health.  Which includes eating more fruits and vegetables which she mixes into smoothies and brings to work for lunch.  Remember the photo of her eating the 7-11 hot dog?  Those days are gone and she loads her lunch plate with cauliflower, broccoli, carrots and green beans.  Way to go Future Mama!

She has also started walking her dog 2-3 days a week, with the goal to walk daily. And she plans to enroll in a prenatal yoga class to round out her fitness routine.

I am so proud of Future Mama for moving into a space of empowerment and responsibility.  She is experiencing first-hand the power that proper nutrition and exercise have on a healthy, vibrant and harmonious pregnancy.

Keep it up girl!
